Cheyenne, the name itself reflects its past and history. Experience and "Live The Legend"! The legends of yesterday came alive as history and progress stand side by side and Cheyenne a town carved by pioneers was molded by the great railroad. Cheyenne was named after the tribe of Plains Indians that once roamed southeastern Wyoming. Rustler's, warring sheepmen and cattlemen, gamblers and gunfighters earned Wyoming's capital nickname of "Hell On Wheels".
The town keeps it spirited past alive during Frontier Days in July. During the ten day extravaganza you will see daily rodeos, horse races, carnivals, parades, country music shows, square dance contest, the fine arts, and variety of foods. You can also view the best Western wagon collection and memorabilia in the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum located next to Frontier Park.
During the cold war the United States armed themselves with intercontinental ballistic missiles which can be found at F.E. Warren Air Force Base. Visit the F.E. Warren Museum for the history of Fort D.A. Russell and other history relating to life during the late 1800's.
Points of interest and things to see in and around Cheyenne is the Wyoming Arts Council Gallery, the Wyoming State Museum, the Historic Governor's Mansion, the "Big Boy" Steam Engine, the French Merci Train, the Engine 1242 (oldest locomotive in Wyoming) located in Lions Park. See the historic displays and photographs in the gold dome Wyoming State Capitol Building. Botanic Gardens is a 6,800 square foot three sectioned green house conservatory. It has one of the regions largest and most unique solar energy demonstrations. During the winter months it has a colorful display of flowers and trees.
For a western experience visit the Terry Bison Ranch, which is located near Cheyenne. The ranch offers an entertainment and family oriented western experience which includes horse-drawn wagon tours, horseback riding, bison, and home-cooked meals.
Cheyenne surroundry allows for plenty of outdoor activity from fishing to hiking in the mountains.
